Greene County’s rich heritage can be traced from many of its current families back to the 1700’s from a variety of European settlers among the Native Americans.

In 1716, Governor Alexander Spotswood and his “Knights of the Golden Horseshoe” traveled through Greene on their history-making expedition to the Blue Ridge Mountains passing through Swift Run Gap near Stanardsville, the county seat. This expedition paved the way for settlement in the west.

General “Stonewall” Jackson also used this gap during the Civil War. One particular skirmish, The Battle of Stanardsville, took place in Greene County on March 1, 1864.

Greene County also played a part in the formation of Shenandoah National Park. In 1935, Greene County contributed about 15,000 acres to the Park.
