Cashiers, North Carolina
A Resort Town of Renown, Cashiers Has Long
Played Host to Lowcountry Soirees
The unincorporated resort town of Cashiers (pronounced "Cash-ers"), perched at 3,486 feet in the Blue Ridge mountains near the South Carolina line, is a departure from the rest of Jackson County in many ways. It's one of the southeast's most popular spots for second homes, with championship golf courses and spectacular vistas all around. Cashiers' uniqueness is reflected in the one-of-a-kind nature of its "downtown," an informal scattering of buildings tucked into the trees around the crossroads of two serpentine mountain roads. The Cashiers Valley is rich in waterfalls and hiking trails, and is known for its resorts, including the venerable High Hampton Inn and Country Club, founded in 1922 on the former estate General Wade Hampton. The Cashiers Post Office was established in 1839, and the valley has since served mostly as a summertime retreat for families from the deep south.
